Why I built it
Proxy workflows shouldn’t be this fragile.
High-resolution anamorphic originals are beautiful, but unnecessarily heavy for editing. The tools I tried either kept footage squeezed, lost timecode, created a black first frame, or exposed a wall of settings.
DeProxy packages the FFmpeg workflow I could trust into one focused Mac utility. It produces compact, correctly de-squeezed proxies that retain the information needed to link back to the originals.
Converted to compact, responsive proxy media.
Camera edit-list preroll is removed cleanly.
Source names and timecode are preserved.
How it works
Three choices.
Then let the Mac run.
The defaults are tuned for a dependable editing workflow. Advanced controls stay available when you need them.
Choose your footage
Select a source folder or drop any supported video onto the window. DeProxy creates a Proxy folder beside it by default.
Set the squeeze
Choose 1.33×, 1.5×, 1.6×, 1.8×, 2× or enter a custom value. Then pick the editing resolution.
Generate proxies
Process clips in parallel, follow progress file by file, and safely skip proxies you have already made.
Using your proxies
Generated. Linked.
Ready to edit.
DeProxy creates normal media files. Attach them to your originals in your editor, then switch between proxy and camera media whenever you need to.

H.265 Main10
Apple VideoToolbox acceleration with an hvc1 QuickTime tag. The 1080p default targets 6 Mbps.
Square-pixel output
Width is calculated from source aspect ratio, squeeze and target height, then rounded to a valid even dimension.
(6960 ÷ 4640) × 1.5 × 1080 = 2430Timecode kept intact
Source timecode is preserved whenever FFprobe exposes it, helping your editor match proxies back to camera originals.
Built to finish cleanly
Temporary files remain hidden until complete. Cancelling removes partial output, while existing proxies can be skipped.
Everything stays local.
FFmpeg and FFprobe run directly on your Mac. There are no uploads, accounts, tracking pixels or cloud processing.
